When you feel your child is ready for toilet teaching, I ask that you begin this teaching at home. Once you feel you have a good start at home, I will follow through and encourage your child while they are in my care. This type of training takes a lot of work and patience on your part and mine. It is very important to wait until your child is truly ready!!!
The signs of readiness include:
· Child is consistently dry after naps and in the morning.
· Child is able to remove pants and sit on toilet/potty chair with little assistance.
· Child can verbalize his/her needs to use the toilet with being asked.
· Child wants to use the toilet.
Please keep in mind that the activity level here can distract your child from responding to an urge to use the potty, more so than at your home. Therefore, I will continue to use diapers until your child can and will announce that he/she must use the bathroom and can control his/her bladder and bowels for a few minutes beyond that. When the child has reached that point, pull ups or training pants may be used. Diapers or pull ups will be used during nap time.
DO NOT bring your child to child care in panties or underwear until he/she has established very good control. Please make sure that your child is dressed in “user-friendly” clothing during this time. The best items are shorts/pants, depending on the season, with elastic waists. PLEASE avoid tight fitting clothes, pants with snaps or zippers and overalls. Your child will feel a sense of accomplishment from being able to pull their pants up and down by themselves. Clothes with too many “gadgets” make it hard to get to the potty on time.
During this time please provide the following:
· Three complete changes of clothing (socks included)
· 4 to 6 training pants and/or pull ups
· Diapers or extra pull ups for nap time
